What about my life of leisure?

What about my life of leisure?
Host: Jim Hughes

Leisure isn't leisure if it's all we do.

Leisure is for recharging. There has to be something to recharge for!

Leisure can't replace the role of work in our lives.

Retirement should include leisure, and it also should include work. How about making the work function service to God and man?

Welcome!

I believe with all my heart that God raised up this oversized generation called Baby Boomers, gave them 30 years of extra life compared to only 100 years ago, and gave them the ability to choose how they use this time for a purpose. That purpose is to serve Him, and in serving Him, to serve others.

To some that may seem radical. Retirement as a concept is only 120 years old, invented in 1885. But for the last 50 years, our culture has worked hard to create the definition that retirement is for your leisure -- "You've worked hard for all these years, and now you deserve to kick back and live a life of leisure." The real message is more like, "Move out of the way. Quit working, quit serving, and quit leading. You're not needed any more."

Life is meant to be filled with purpose. Work is a significant part of providing that purpose. So is service. When purpose is removed from life, both physical and mental illnesses often arise, just to prove the point. Golf, fishing, and traveling, while pleasant diversions, cannot subsitute for serving purposes that meet the needs of others -- work and service.

This generation seems to be very aware of this truth. According to the latest AARP survey, about 75% of Boomers plan to work during retirement. For some, there is a financial necessity. But multiple studies have shown that the majority plan to work because they like to work.

My vision is simply that for many, this work will be focused on serving God and others. The purpose of this podcast is to help you think about doing that. I'll talk about the how, they why, the where, and the what. And we'll mix in some examples of people that are doing it successfully, as well as some stories of folks who've tried and run into obstacles.

I hope you'll provide feedback and questions, because that will enrich the discussion.

For some of you, this will be your first introduction to podcasting. For information on what podcasting is and how to take advantage of it, see the link "Podcasting" on the sidebar. And don't forget to subscribe to the feed which will deliver updates as they become available.
